One Year Anniversary of City Island Sailing.com!

Ornament at amazon.com

I started this website exactly one year ago on Christmas. There wasn't a central website that City Island sailors could go to for yacht club and race information, salty storytelling, racing/cruising tips, island photos, nautical and seaside tidbits, or just a fun and local sailing site to anchor for a few minutes a day.

Now 12 months and 14,800 hits later, we're growing! I'm anticipating in 2012 making some additions, one of which is inviting guest bloggers who have exciting, historic, and sometimes harrowing stories to tell! I've met many people over the 5 years that I've lived on City Island and there's nothing quite as fun as listening to sailors share their tales over a beer or two. So, please email me if you've a story or info to contribute. You can also read my monthly column, Sailing Life on City Island in the Island Current.

Thank you for visiting City Island Sailing, and for all your comments, emails, and input!

Holiday Groove

Just getting in the groove!

ncholidayflotilla.org

In The Groove term:
In sports, referring to the optimum state of balance and performance. In sailing, the course taken with the sails properly set which allows the boat to reach its maximum speed and best angle to the wind for prevailing conditions. "Our boat was in the groove and we were fast approaching our final destination." (virtualvoyages.com)

Harness Happiness

In doing some research for the Newport to Bermuda race I hope to do this summer, I came across this video (BT Global Challenge race). If not for the simple harness, well, see for yourself!
Gives a whole different meaning to "dark-n-stormy."

 I prefer this dark-n-stormy. After the Newport-Bermuda Race 2010.

Lifeguard On Duty

The sunbathers have left.
The crowds gone.
The water is still,
the sounds quiet.

The warmth of these colors reach out,
dreamlike they surround me.

Saffire blue,
 tangerine orange,
emerald black.

I receive this December gift from the Maker of Sunsets
and absorb these colors
deep into my soul.

And I am reminded of the Lifeguard who is always on duty,

even when I don't see one.
